What you will do 

As a Senior program officer, your responsibilities may include:

  • Managing selected research or award funding programs, including planning consultations and designing, implementing and monitoring new and existing programs.
  • Liaising with program stakeholders.
  • Monitoring program performance.
  • Collaborating on the development of award administration tools.
  • Negotiating funding agreements; and
  • Preparing reports for senior management and governing bodies. 

What you need to succeed

Education

Experience

  • Experience in the identification and analysis of policy and procedural problems and issues.
  • Experience in working with partner organizations  and/or developing and monitoring joint programs.
  • Research experience in a university, government, or similar setting.
  • Sound experience*  in the administration of research and/or award funding programs.

* Sound experience: equivalent to one (1) or more years of experience

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the mandate, structure and roles of the SSHRC and Tri-agency policies, programs and procedures particularly as it relates to funding applications.
  • Knowledge of the academic environment, the research community and of the structure of research/research training funding in Canada.
  • Knowledge of theories and principles of project management.
  • Knowledge of other levels of government, non-government, public and private sectors that may impact on SSHRC and/or Tri-agency programs, projects and/or activities.

Competencies

  • Ability to plan, manage and control a high volume of diverse activities in accordance with policies and procedures, and under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work effectively in a matrix environment requiring coordination with other team members.
  • Ability to research and analyze data, reports and other documentation to formulate recommendations.
  • Ability to develop and maintain contacts within a research area and with a variety of agencies and organizations.
  • Ability to develop and manage a project requiring input and buy-in from others, from initial concept phase to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills – verbally and in writing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and negotiation skills. 
  • Demonstrates strong judgment and ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrates flexibility and initiate in addressing emerging issues.
  • Demonstrates thoroughness and reliability in completing tasks, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail.
